Welcome back to the Accidental CEO Podcast! Today, we have a special guest, Allan Ngo, who is joining us all the way from Manila. Allan helps people monetize their expertise by creating digital products, enabling them to add an additional income stream without trading time for money. Let’s dive into his fascinating journey and learn how he can help you do the same.
From Corporate Life to Digital Entrepreneurship
Allan’s journey began far from the world of digital entrepreneurship. He started as a certified public accountant, following a traditional career path. However, his perspective on money, career, and business shifted dramatically after reading “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. Allan’s journey took him from corporate life to starting a franchise business in the restaurant industry. Despite the supposed ease of running a franchise, Allan experienced burnout in his early 20s.
Seeking a change, Allan took a sabbatical to study business and language in China. Upon his return, he found himself part of the unemployment rate and turned to the internet in search of new opportunities. This exploration led him to ODesk (now Upwork), where he landed his first online job, earning three times his previous salary. This experience ignited his passion for making money online and eventually led him to affiliate marketing and digital products.
The $8 Sale That Changed Everything
One of Allan’s pivotal moments came from an $8 sale he made through affiliate marketing. After two years of trying various online ventures without success, he made this small but significant sale by promoting a Canadian author’s ebook on learning Mandarin. This sale, though modest, felt like a million dollars to Allan. It proved to him that he could sell and make money online by simply being himself.
Allan emphasizes the importance of moving forward despite setbacks. His drive to avoid returning to a traditional job and his desire to support his future family kept him motivated through challenging times. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance and adaptability in the face of uncertainty.
Helping Others Monetize Their Expertise
Allan’s mission revolves around helping service providers earn more money without sacrificing their time. He assists clients in identifying the aspects of their knowledge and expertise that can be monetized effectively. One approach he advocates is looking at what clients are already being paid for and leveraging that expertise to create digital products.
For instance, one of Allan’s students was already being paid to close deals through DMs. Allan suggested he offer this skill as a training program, leading to a significant breakthrough for the student. Allan believes in simplicity and encourages his clients to start with what they already have, such as scripts, templates, and coaching calls stored in their hard drives.
The Importance of Personal Fulfillment
Allan’s coaching philosophy emphasizes that a business should serve its owner, not the other way around. He shares his own experiences of losing sight of personal fulfillment while chasing growth. Allan advocates for deliberate growth and maintaining a balance between professional and personal life.
He practices what he preaches by blocking time for learning and curiosity, a practice he encourages his clients to adopt. Allan believes that finding joy in learning and maintaining personal hobbies are crucial for overall happiness and success.
The Power of Knowledge as an Equalizer
Coming from a developing country, Allan sees knowledge as a powerful equalizer. He shares a story of one of his students who, after facing setbacks, used Allan’s advice to monetize his existing resources and make a substantial income. Allan’s approach is about empowering individuals to leverage their knowledge and expertise to create opportunities and improve their lives.
Conclusion
Allan Ngo’s journey from corporate burnout to a successful digital entrepreneur is inspiring. His story highlights the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and finding fulfillment in both professional and personal life. By helping others monetize their expertise through digital products, Allan is making a significant impact on the lives of his clients.
